How To Prevent Getting Pickpocketed At SunFest

SunFest 2018 - Day 1

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Organizers are putting the final touches on the West Palm Beach waterfront for SunFest.

Police say they are making some minor adjustments to last year’s security plan to ensure pickpocketing is less of problem.

But they say festival-goers need to keep an eye out too.

“We’ll make sure it’s a fun safe event for everyone,” said Tony Spatara, Assistant Chief of the West Palm Beach Police Department.

Spatara is one of the leaders tasked with keeping SunFest safe.

Overall it is, but he says officers want to make sure pick-pocketing isn’t an issue this year, unlike like last year when dozens of cell phones and credit cards were stolen from people’s pockets.

They made an arrest, but officers say the thefts could have been avoided.

“A lot of people don’t pay attention to their property,” Spatara said.

So this year, Spatara says they’ve been in back-to-back meetings, but they want to make sure SunFest goers do their part too by watching what you wear.

Spatara recommends wearing “clothing that helps conceal out property.”

He also says to keep your belongings close.

“A zipper makes it harder for people to engage in criminal activity,” Spatara said.

That way SunFest is enjoyable for everyone.

“I just think SunFest is going to be a safe event,” Spatara said.

Police say to keep a lookout for any suspicious activity, like someone going into other people’s property and scanning eyes.

They say if you notice anything strange, just let them know.
