Tips From Law Enforcement On Avoiding Christmastime Crimes

Criminal with Christmas Presents

The holiday season presents a prime opportunity for criminals...so says Jupiter Police Chief Dan Kerr.

"There's a lot more people out...people shopping in all of the stores and the malls and frequenting restaurants. We have a lot more people in the area due to the seasonal residents."

He urges you to be aware of your surroundings while you shop to avoid being victimized and if you head out of town over the holidays, install a timer for your outdoor lights to try and keep the burglars away.

"There's all kinds of things out there to make it look like you're there when you're not and it also is safety for you if you normally come home later in the evening. If your outside lights come on for you and maybe your foyer light, makes it a lot safer you to enter your residence."

Another concern this time of year is porch pirates, or crooks who steal packages right off of doorsteps. That happened just this week in Jupiter's Abacoa neighborhood.

A homeowner captured footage of a woman on her Ring doorbell camera, stealing a box that had been delivered.

The group National Neighborhood Watch has a list of tips to avoid those types of crimes:

1) Network with neighbors.

2) Have packages delivered to work.

3) Leave specific drop-off instructions.

4) Use a smart lock.

5) Install security cameras.
