The St. Lucie County Tax Collector's Office is in the middle of controversy over a fundraising effort that claims to be for Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas.
Employees put up posters advertising a raffle to the public labeling it for "Bahamas Relief" but in the fine print at the bottom the poster disclosed that a portion of the proceeds would be going toward the Tax Collector's Office annual holiday party.
Someone took a picture of the poster and put it on social media, which brought on angry comments.
Tax Collector Chris Craft calls it a "horrible misjudgement and a failure" by his staff. He says he didn't know about the fundraiser until Thursday and that all of the posters have been taken down.
Craft also says 100 percent of the proceeds already brought in will now go toward the hurricane relief efforts. That amounts to $1,200.
