Broward County Charging Man For Selling Fentanyl To Someone Who OD'd

Broward County is charging a man with first-degree murder for selling fentanyl to a person who later overdosed.

It's the first time this type of charge has been brought against someone in Broward County.

The charge against 58-year-old Bernard Gonzalez of Miramar was announced yesterday after being decided by a grand jury.

This comes after the March death of 31-year-old Kelly Fitzgerald of Miami.

In 2017, state lawmakers passed a new law allowing prosecutors to charge dealers with murder for dealing a fatal dose of fentanyl or drugs mixed with fentanyl.

Prior to that they could only prosecute dealers with murder for fatal doses of cocaine or heroin.
