Fort Lauderdale Officers Injured In Shooting

A Fort Lauderdale police officer is expected to be OK after being shot this morning. It all started just after 7:30 this morning when Fort Lauderdale police received a call from a man who reported he killed someone inside a Holiday Inn Express room just off the 17th Street Causeway.

"The suspect was unable to make contact, so we entered the room. Shots were fired at the officers at that time. Our officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, at which time the suspect barricaded himself in that same room," said Bill Schultz, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief.

Chief Bill Schultz says when they entered the room, the suspect was found dead.

One officer was shot - and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second officer was treated on the scene for a non-gunshot injury.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. The three officers who opened fire have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
